Ozark Season 1 — References To The Bible (Jesus’ Parables)

Prophesy of Isaiah

The prophesy of Isaiah is an important part of the Bible. Jesus uses this prophesy to explain to his disciples why he speaks in parables. The prophesy reads:

“Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don't see, and hearing, they don't hear, neither do they understand. In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled. . .”

What this means is that Jesus’ method of speaking also describes his message. He speaks in stories because people hear the message yet they still do not understand.

Lets use Season 1 to understand this further:

When the Langmores steal the money that Marty gave to Del, Marty has a problem. Similar to the way Del was “fishing” to see if Bruce would take the bait and admit to stealing; Marty had to become a fisher of men.

He rents boat . . .

and goes looking for the Langmores…

When he finds them, he gives a preview of the rest of the season. He tells them what will happen.

If they take any of the money, they’re going to have to kill Marty, and threaten to put a family member in jail.

Russ and Boyd ignored Marty’s words. They took the money, and their actions in Season 1, fulfilled Jesus’ prophesy.

'By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand;. . .” Seeing you will see, and will in no way perceive: for this people's heart has grown callous, their ears are dull of hearing, they have closed their eyes; or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and should turn again; and I would heal them.'‘

In this way, the death of Russ and Boyd fulfill the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares:

“"He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the children of the Kingdom; and the weeds are the children of the evil one…

As the darnel weeds are gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity,and will cast them into the furnace of fire.”
